BANANA ALMOND BUTTER RECOVERY SMOOTHIE + 5 FAV BOOT CAMPS FOR SUMMER

Welcome to the first edition of “Fitness Friday” where I’ll be posting a fitness related article with the goal of opening up conversations about being vegan and being fit. After all, the more calories ya burn the more delicious vegan treats ya can eat! This week is all about being vegan and being strong. What’s the secret to having it all?

I am not a certified fitness or nutrition anything, but for me incorporating 2-3 boot camp type workouts a week has made all the difference. Why? Because by combining intense cardio with strength moves you burn mega calories while simultaneously building muscle and getting toned. So, in this week’s post I’m reviewing my top five favorite boot camps for summer and sharing an oh-so-delicious, oh-so-protein-packed Banana Almond Butter Recovery Smoothie recipe.

Eat, drink, party, exercise. It all fits into a life filled with MORE.

I define “boot camp” as any workout that is a challenging combo of cardio and strength moves. Don’t worry, no screaming army men involved. I first got hooked on boot camp workouts doing Camp Gladiator in Austin, which I miss so so so much! (Please come to Charlotte!!!) However, after months of being pretty lazy here in my new hometown, I realized that not having Camp Gladiator was no excuse for letting myself become a couch potato. So, I turned to Pinterest and started pinning and trying lots of boot camp workouts.

Besides the fact that they make you a calorie burning machine, one of the most fantastic things about boot camps is that they are perfect for summer. You can do them outside at the park in the sunshine with little to no equipment. After all, no one wants to be cooped up inside a gym during the best time of the year! Also, bootcamp workouts are fast-paced so there is no getting bored and they’re even better if you bring some friends along.

I’ve recruited my husband and a few friends to do these workouts with me and they’re hooked, too! My friend, Amanda, is feeling wedding dress ready and Jeremy even said his tight pants buttoned with no problem this week. Woo hoo! So grab a towel, an iPhone for tunes and a timer, and head outside to work up a sweat, catch some rays, and spend some time with friends. Multitasking like this makes me feel amazing and well-deserving of that post-workout smoothie!

Getting in shape and staying motivated is really tough, but thanks to these boot camp workouts, my vegan butt is finally getting whipped back into shape! In no particular order, here are my five favs that will have you looking and feeling good in no time!

Notes She Rocks Fitness makes me want to move to Houston just so I can go to meet Katie in person and go to one of her classes! She is totally inspirational and the workouts she posts are the perfect combo of challenging and doable. Like, no I don't want to do all those lunges or squats, but I know I CAN and it will be worth it in the end.
Why I Like It: This boot camp gives you a total body workout. Booty, abs, arms, legs: She Rocks Fitness has you covered. Also, the bursts of cardio that the jumping jacks and the mountain climbers provide kept my heart rate up the whole time. It's not going to be easy, but that's a good thing! The challenges this workout provides will keep you coming back for more.
Time & Equipment:
*Approx. 60 minutes
*Park bench, towel

*Repeat each circuit 3 times and then rest 1 minute before moving onto the next circuit.
*Static Lunges
Modifications: This was the first boot camp workout that I did after nearly a year of not doing a single push-up or lunge! So, needless to say, I needed some modifications.
*If you're just beginning to workout, try completing each circuit twice instead of three times.
*For the planks, if you can't hold one for a full minute, set smaller goals and work your way up. Try holding it for 30 seconds and then 45 seconds until you work your way up to the full minute.
*If I'm short on time, I'll cut the workout down to the first and third circuits. 3.2.2708

Two of my five favorites are straight from the She Rock's blog. Also, did I mention how awesome I think the name of Katie's company is? I certainly feel like I rock after I finish one of her workouts. Girl Power!
Why I Like It: If there's one thing age has taught me, it's that it's all about the arms, baby. This workout will help you get the sexy sculpted arms, plus incorporates burst of cardio and plenty of leg work to have you feeling it the next day. (Ugh! Will there ever be a workout without squats?!)
Time & Equipment:
*Approx. 45 minutes
*Set of dumbbells (I started with 5 lbs., but am now up to 8 lbs.)

The first circuit is the hardest! If you can get through it, you can do the whole thing!
Modifications:
*For the cardio, I usually run a ½ mile or jump rope.
*Another option for the cardio is to do a minute each of a mix of "in-one-place-cardio" like high knees, butt kicks, jumping jacks, ski jumps, skips, etc. 3.2.2708

Why I Like It: Since this Cardio Crush workout it's designed for travelers on the go, it's one you can do anytime, anywhere. No excuses! It's on the shorter side, but you work hard the WHOLE time. You'll know you've had a good workout when the time is up!

*Jump Rope
*Set of Stairs

*There's a small set of stairs at the park near me, so I use those, but if you can't find stairs, do high knees.

Notes This Killer Cardio Workout is just one of many workouts posted on Deryn's Blog, Running on Real Food, that will totally kick your butt. Not to mention, Deryn is vegan and posts lots of yummy recipes. Seriously, what's not to love about her?! She's the kind of blogger I aspire to be and I'm not sure how she balances it all, but she's certainly doing a brilliant job.
Why I Like It: I am a runner and as some of you might remember from earlier posts, it's a goal of mine to run a half marathon in under two hours this year. That means I need to get faster! Interval workouts like this are what make you faster. I've also read that if you're trying to lose weight, doing intervals can help you get over weight loss plateaus. With the strength moves added in, the running is broken up a bit and you get a killer total body workout. Be prepared to sweat during this one!
Time & Equipment:
*Approx. 55 minutes
*Kettle Ball or dumbbell (optional)

*Goblet Squat
*I like to use the Interval Run app when I do this workout. It beeps at you when you to tell you when to run faster and when to slow down so you don't have to be constantly watching the clock.
Modifications:
*For the goblet squats, you can complete them holding a dumbbell instead or just do regular squats.
*Not quite ready to run the whole thing? For the "easy" time you can walk if you need to, but challenge yourself to always run on the "sprints." Work your way up to being able to jog/run the whole thing.
*Another option is to cut the running times down from 10 minutes to 7 or 8 minutes and then challenge yourself to do one extra interval each round each time you do the workout. 3.2.2708
4.0 from 1 reviews Workout #5: Print Notes This workout is one that I adapted from a Cardio Strength Class that I took at the YMCA. It's a great combo of cardio and strength, but a little bit easier than Workout #4.
Why I Like It: My favorite thing about this workout is the time limit aspect because it challenges me to run faster and to not take unnecessary breaks during the strength moves. In my mind, I just keep reminding myself, "11 minutes, then a break. You can make it 11 minutes." I also like keeping time because although I have yet to get through all 30 burpees at the end, it's motivational to always try to beat the number I did the last time. Maybe one day I'll be able to do even more than 30!
Time & Equipment:
*Approx. 45 minutes
Helpful Links & Notes:
*You want to run hard during this workout since you're only doing a ½ mile at a time. it should be faster than your 5k pace.
*Leg Lifts
Modifications:
*You want to try to run hard for the full ½ mile, but if you need to walk, do it. It's important to take things at your own pace. Just remember to keep setting goals so you're always pushing yourself to go farther. 3.2.2708

Banana Almond Butter Recovery Smoothie

After completing a challenging workout like the ones in my top 5, it’s important to make sure that your body gets all the nourishment it needs to stay energized and help your muscles recover. However, I have to admit that until recently, I hadn’t given the connection between my diet and my workouts much thought. Since I eat a variety of fruits and veggies and lots of protein-rich foods like tofu, tempeh, beans, and legumes, I just assumed that I was in the clear.

However, after my nearly year-long hiatus, I noticed that after I worked out like this, I would be SO sore, so I began to wonder…Was I getting enough protein to sustain these tough workouts?

It was time for an experiment, so I did some research about the kinds of foods that help your body recover from a workout and used that info to develop this recipe. Then, I put it to the test. I really didn’t think that it would make a difference at all. I kind of thought all the protein talk was a lot of hubbub, but you know what? It turns out that it does make a difference and a pretty big one. I had just sort of gotten used to being really sore after I did a boot camp, until I tried drinking this smoothie afterwards. I noticed that suddenly I was feeling pretty darn good the next morning and instead of two or three days of soreness after a really challenging workout, it was only maybe one day. It was quite an improvement!

BANANA ALMOND BUTTER RECOVERY SMOOTHIE + 5 FAV BOOT CAMPS FOR SUMMER

4.0 from 1 reviews Banana Almond Butter Recovery Smoothie Print Prep time Total time A yummy protein and nutrient-packed treat after a tough workout. You're muscles will thank you later! Serves: 2 Ingredients

  • 1½ cups almond milk
  • 2 frozen bananas
  • 3 tbsp. almond butter
  • 3 medjool dates (pitted)
  • 3 tbsp. hemp seeds
  • 1 tsp. cocao powder
  • ½ tsp. cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and blend for 5 minutes or more until desired smoothie texture is achieved.
  2. Serve immediately or refrigerate to drink later.

Notes *Add ¾ cup more almond milk to make a thinner shake and divide it into 3 servings to reduce calories.
*Peel bananas before freezing.
*Substitute regular bananas if you don't have time to freeze, but add some ice to get the cold smoothie texture.
